JIC RELEASE NO. 803 - Eight COVID-19-related Fatalities Reported; COVID-19 Hospital Census: 70; Cumulative COVID-19 Test Results: 162 New Cases

Eight COVID-19-related Fatalities Reported September 24 – 26
The Joint Information Center (JIC) was notified of eight (8) additional COVID-related fatalities reported between September 24 – 26:

  • The 185th COVID-19-related fatality was pronounced dead on arrival at the Guam Memorial Hospital (GMH) on September 24, 2021. The patient was a 56-year-old male, unvaccinated with no known underlying health conditions who tested positive on September 24. 
  • The 186th COVID-19-related fatality was pronounced dead on arrival on September 25, 2021. The patient was a 69-year-old male, unvaccinated and with no known underlying health conditions who tested positive on September 11. 
  • The 187th COVID-19-related fatality occurred at GMH on September 25, 2021. The patient was an 80-year-old male, unvaccinated, with underlying health conditions who tested positive on September 9.
  • The 188th COVID-19-related fatality occurred at GMH on September 25, 2021. The patient was a 75-year-old male, unvaccinated with underlying health conditions who tested positive on September 18.
  • The 189th COVID-19-related fatality occurred at GMH on September 25, 2021. The patient was a 70-year-old male, unvaccinated with underlying health conditions who tested positive on August 30.
  • The 190th COVID-19-related fatality occurred at GMH on September 25, 2021. The patient was a 75-year-old male, unvaccinated with underlying health conditions who tested positive on September 13.
  • The 191st COVID-19-related fatality occurred at the Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) on September 26, 2021. The patient was an 80-year-old male, unvaccinated, with underlying health conditions who tested positive on September 17, 2021.
  • The 192nd COVID-19-related fatality was pronounced dead on arrival at GMH on September 26, 2021. The patient was a 53-year-old male, unvaccinated with no known underlying conditions who tested positive on September 26. 

 

“In the face of the toll upon us this evening, we recognize our fight with this deadly virus is far from over but we are not defenseless. With added interventions in place, including vaccinations and monoclonal antibody therapy, we can protect those we love and prevent further devastation,” said Governor Lou Leon Guerrero. “For those who have experienced the greatest of loss in this ongoing battle, Jeff, Josh, and I keep you in our thoughts and prayers.”

The Guam Behavioral Health and Wellness Center (GBHWC) has a Crisis Hotline available 24/7 at (671) 647-8833/4. For those feeling anxious, stressed, overwhelmed, or need to talk to someone, GBHWC has experienced providers available and ready to assist the community with any heightened stress and anxiety experienced as a result of COVID-19.

DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT’S TOO LATE. Look for emergency warning signs for COVID-19. Seek emergency medical care immediately or call 911 if you have trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion, inability to wake or stay awake, or bluish lips or face.

 

Individuals who are sick are advised to: 

  • Stay home, except to seek medical care. Call ahead before visiting the clinic/doctor.
  • Monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 including fever, cough, and shortness of breath, fatigue, body aches, headaches, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion, nausea and/or diarrhea.
  • Get tested if you have symptoms of COVID-19. While waiting for test results, you should stay away from others, including staying apart from those living in your household.

Cumulative COVID-19 Test Results: 162 New Cases of COVID-19 from September 24 – 26
Today, DPHSS reported 35 new cases of COVID-19 out of 298 tests performed on September 27. 4 cases were identified through contact tracing.

An additional 127 cases were also reported today as a result of complete analysis and case submissions from other clinics for preliminary COVID-19 test results reported September 25 – 26. Official case counts for the past weekend results are as follows:


To date, there have been a total of 14,536 officially reported cases, 192 deaths, 3,203 cases in active isolation, and 11,141 not in active isolation. The CAR Score is 22.9.


Guam COVID-19 Vaccination Update
As of September 25, 292 additional residents received their first dose in a two-dose series, 45 residents received their dose in the single-dose series, and an additional 759 residents have become fully vaccinated. To date, a total of 118,756 (87.13%) of Guam’s eligible population (residents 12 years and older) is fully vaccinated. This percentage includes 10,318 fully vaccinated residents between the ages of 12 – 17, and 108,438 fully vaccinated adults.

Four GDOE Employees Test Positive for COVID-19
Today, the Guam Department of Education (GDOE) confirmed positive cases for COVID-19 involving 4 employees. The employee cases were identified at Chief Brodie Memorial Elementary School, Daniel L. Perez Elementary School, Juan M. Guerrero Elementary School, and Southern High School. In collaboration with the DPHSS, GDOE has identified and notified teachers as well as parents of students who may have been in contact with the index case in order to schedule testing. Tested individuals will remain in quarantine until they are cleared by DPHSS. Cleaning and disinfecting of areas of the campuses are taking place.
